Múšelni (taken from the German word Muschel meaning shellfish) is a dish served in scallop shell (Mediterranean scallop or capesante). It is “fake” shellfish, which means that instead of shellfish, veal is used and served au gratin in the shell. The tendency to counterfeit original ingredients occurs due to fact that shellfish is highly perishable over long journey to the final customer. Seashells were highly valued and considered a great specialty in the past. Múšelni were prepared only on special occasions by families in city of Ljubljana, mostly as warm appetizers, so guests were served a maximum of one or two shells with meat.
