Cut the raw butter into cubes, add sugar, egg yolks and everything mix well. Add flour and a little anise and mix well. Shape the pretzels, coat them with egg whites and sprinkle with crystal sugar. Bake for 10 minutes in a preheated oven at 170 ° C.

The recipe is according to the recipe in Valentin Vodnik’s Kuharske bukve adapted to present time. Kuharske bukve is the first cookbook in Slovene language, issued in 1799. Vodnik’s soft pretzels are written on page 101, under recipe number 163.
